Heavy rainfall on Wednesday failed to dampen the enthusiasm of supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the party’s 2027 governorship candidate in Ogun State, Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu, popularly known as Lado, formally flagged off his campaign in Ogun Central.
The campaign kickoff, held at the Pavilion in the palace of the Alake of Egbaland in Abeokuta, attracted party leaders, political stakeholders and hundreds of supporters who braved the downpour to demonstrate their support for the PDP candidate.
Adebutu, accompanied by his running mate, Hon. Latifat Sowunmi Kolapo, made a dramatic journey from the party secretariat to the campaign venue despite the heavy rain, with supporters following the campaign train.
Among the prominent figures at the event was Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who is being presented by the PDP as its candidate for the Ogun Central Senatorial District.
Addressing the gathering, Adebutu outlined his administration’s proposed agenda for Ogun State, highlighting healthcare, agriculture, security, infrastructure development and workers’ welfare as key priorities.
The PDP candidate also promised to place the welfare of residents at the centre of his administration, pledging to pursue policies aimed at improving living standards and creating opportunities for the people.
The campaign, which effectively signals the commencement of the PDP’s grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 governorship election, was marked by chants and solidarity songs from party supporters despite the persistent rainfall.
Also speaking, the Ogun State PDP Chairman, Hon. Abayomi Tella, criticised the emergence of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Tella argued that Ogun West stakeholders ought to have produced a different candidate, describing Adeola in highly critical terms.
The PDP chairman’s remarks added a sharper political dimension to the campaign kickoff as the opposition party seeks to consolidate its support across Ogun Central and expand its influence ahead of the 2027 election.
With the campaign now officially underway, the PDP is expected to intensify its grassroots mobilisation across the three senatorial districts of Ogun State as it seeks to challenge the ruling party in the 2027 governorship contest.
