Real Madrid have completed the signing of Ivory Coast international Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig in a deal worth up to £120m (140m euros), as the club continues its summer spending spree under new head coach Jose Mourinho.
The 19-year-old winger has put pen to paper on a seven-year contract, with his eventual price tag potentially eclipsing the £115m (133.9m euros) Real paid Borussia Dortmund for Jude Bellingham back in June 2023.
Should the fee reach its full value, Diomande would rank as the fourth most expensive player in football history, trailing only Paris St-Germain duo Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, along with Liverpool’s Alexander Isak, formerly of Newcastle.
It also makes him the most expensive African player ever, surpassing the £72m Arsenal paid Lille for compatriot Nicolas Pepe in 2019.
Real’s move comes after a competitive chase for the teenager’s signature. PSG had long been considered favourites to land him, but the Champions League holders withdrew from the race on Sunday after seeing a £102.5m offer rejected.
Liverpool had also shown interest earlier in the window, with an initial £69m bid turned down in June as the Merseyside club searches for a replacement for Mohamed Salah, who completed a move to Turkish side Trabzonspor on Thursday.
With the deal now done, Diomande becomes Real’s sixth signing of the summer under Mourinho, joining Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella and Carlos Espi at the Bernabeu – a recruitment drive that underlines the club’s determination to overhaul the squad heading into the new season.
Leaving Leipzig was not without emotion for the youngster. In a farewell statement, he thanked supporters for their unwavering backing, joking that their paths could cross again in the Champions League.
He described the switch to Madrid as the realisation of a childhood dream and thanked the German club for facilitating the move despite his existing contract.
That sentiment reflects a breakout year in Germany. Diomande was named the Bundesliga’s Young Player of the Season for 2025-26 after netting 12 goals and providing eight assists, form that also saw him feature in all four of Ivory Coast’s matches at the World Cup, where the team exited in the round of 32 to Norway.
His path to that stage has taken him from Ivory Coast to a US academy, before a move to Spanish club Leganes in 2025 and then on to Leipzig later that year.
It is precisely that trajectory – rapid development followed by standout performances on the continent’s biggest stages – that convinced Real Madrid to move so decisively.
The signing fits a clear pattern at the club of securing elite young talent before it reaches its peak, and Diomande’s blistering pace, dribbling ability and attacking instincts have made him one of the most sought-after prospects in the game.
After racking up 13 goals and 10 assists across all competitions in his first full European season, interest from several major clubs was inevitable.
Central to his appeal is his versatility on either flank. From the left, he can cut inside onto his stronger right foot and threaten the goal directly; from the right, he can use his pace and crossing ability to create chances for team-mates.
That adaptability makes him a strong fit for a Real Madrid side that has long sought greater consistency in the right-wing position.
The scale of the fee underlines just how highly the club rates his long-term potential. Having built a productive partnership with right-back Ridle Baku at Leipzig, Diomande could see his attacking output flourish further as he links up with Real’s experienced full-backs, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Cucurella, in what the club hopes will be the start of a long-term project built around him.
