Eight national officers of the Scripture Union of Nigeria have regained their freedom after spending 21 days in captivity following their abduction by gunmen in Imo State.
The victims were kidnapped on June 14 along the Orlu-Mgbidi Road while travelling from Okigwe to Ibadan after attending the organisation’s national conference at the Camp of Faith in Okigwe.
The National Chairman of the Scripture Union of Nigeria, Willy Onu, confirmed their release in a statement, saying the victims were freed on Sunday, July 5, and had safely reunited with their families.
“To the glory of God, our brethren were released on Sunday, July 5, 2026, and are safe and healthy,” Onu said.
He expressed gratitude to members of the organisation and well-wishers for their prayers, encouragement and financial support throughout the period of the victims’ captivity.
“With hearts full of immense relief and profound gratitude to Almighty God, we express our deepest appreciation for your unwavering support during the harrowing time our brethren were held captive.
“Their release is a testament to the power of collective prayer, resilience and the sacrifices made by every member of the union at all levels,” he added.
The victims comprised three women — Oluwatomisin Abolarin, Ebenezer Ige and Ola Ige — and five men: Ernest Onyenagbagha, Elijah Chukwudi, Cosmas Udoh, Olumide Ayemobola and the driver, Adekunle Jegede.
Their release came exactly three weeks after they were abducted while returning from the conference.
As of the time of filing this report, it remained unclear whether any ransom was paid to secure their freedom, as the Scripture Union leadership did not comment on the issue.
The abduction had sparked widespread concern among members of the interdenominational Christian organisation, who mounted sustained prayer sessions and appeals for the victims’ safe return.
