The second batch of stranded Nigerians evacuated from South Africa has arrived safely at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
The 66 returnees arrived on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, following an evacuation approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as part of the Federal Government’s commitment to the safety and welfare of Nigerians abroad. The first batch of 258 returnees arrived earlier this month.
The evacuation was facilitated by ValueJet Chairman/CEO, Otunba Kunle Soname, with officials of the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa accompanying the returnees.
Speaking on behalf of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Mr. Dipo Onabowale said arrangements are being made to ensure all registered Nigerians who wish to return are evacuated.
Support and Reintegration
To support their reintegration:
• Imo State indigenes received ₦1 million each, courtesy of Governor Hope Uzodimma.
• MTN Nigeria provided free SIM packs with data worth ₦50,000 and credited ₦100,000 to each returnee’s bank account.
• Pastor Bolaji Idowu of Harvesters International Christian Centre donated ₦100,000 to each returnee.
Officials from NEMA, the National Commission for Refugees, FAAN, the Nigeria Immigration Service, and other relevant agencies were on ground to receive, document, and provide immediate assistance to the returnees.
The returnees expressed appreciation to the Federal Government and all individuals and organisations that supported their safe return and reintegration.
