The Senate has declared the Ondo-South Senatorial District seat vacant, following the exit of Senator Jimoh Ibrahim from the upper chamber.
Lawmakers say the vacancy is in line with constitutional provisions after Ibrahim’s appointment as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
The Senate has now directed the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to conduct a bye-election within thirty days to fill the seat, in accordance with Section 76 Subsection 2 of the 1999 Constitution.
Senator Ibrahim, who represented Ondo-South, was among sixty-five ambassadorial nominees confirmed by the Senate in December 2025.
His appointment was subsequently approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and he has since assumed office at the United Nations.
