Senator representing Delta North, Ned Nwoko, has denied claims by his estranged wife, Regina Daniels, that he married her at the age of 17, describing the allegation as “false, misleading, and malicious.”
In a statement shared on his Facebook page on Thursday, Nwoko said the claim was part of an orchestrated attempt to tarnish his image amid their ongoing marital dispute.
He explained that when they first met, Regina told him she was 21 years old and presented her Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) voter’s card as proof. The document, he said, showed her date of birth as October 10, 1998.
“It has come to my attention that false claims are being circulated by Regina, suggesting that I married her when she was 17 years old. These claims are entirely untrue and misleading,” Nwoko wrote.
“For clarity, during our first meeting, she told me she was 21 years old. I asked for proof, and she presented her INEC voter’s card showing she was born on October 10, 1998. I kept the document in my possession and have had it since that day. I also recall her mother’s BBC interview after our marriage confirming her age,” he said.
Nwoko added that their marriage took place six years ago, meaning Regina is currently 27 years old.
“According to verifiable records, our marriage took place six years ago. Any suggestion that I married her at 17 is false and should be dismissed,” he said.
The senator further alleged that his estranged wife’s recent remarks were influenced by her “mental health struggles,” claiming she had begun but failed to complete a rehabilitation program for drug addiction.
“The facts are verifiable and indisputable. I urge the public to treat her claims with caution and discernment, especially considering her current mental condition after abandoning her rehabilitation for drug addiction,” he added.
