Shehu Sani Warns Against Weakening ICC Over Global Justice Concerns

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has cautioned against efforts to undermine the International Criminal Court (ICC), warning that weakening the global tribunal could leave countries relying solely on domestic courts to prosecute genocide and crimes against humanity.

In a post shared on his official X account, Sani was reacting to recent remarks by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who criticised the ICC and accused it of threatening American sovereignty.

Sani argued that dismantling the ICC would allow countries to rely only on their domestic judicial systems when dealing with international crimes, a development he warned could weaken global accountability.

His comments followed Rubio’s insistence that the United States would continue to reject the ICC’s jurisdiction over Americans and resist what he described as interference by foreign institutions.
