As conversations surrounding South African singer Tyla’s planned concert in Nigeria continue to divide opinions, media personality Oyemykke has shared his perspective, urging Nigerians not to hold the artiste responsible for the actions of others.
The debate gained momentum following renewed criticism of Tyla over her perceived silence during previous xenophobic attacks on Nigerians living in South Africa. While some public figures have called for a boycott of her Lagos concert, Oyemykke believes the backlash is misplaced.
According to him, although he strongly condemns the xenophobic attacks that have targeted foreigners in South Africa, it would be unfair to punish Tyla for issues beyond her control.
In his words:
“Personally, I don’t support the xenophobic att@cks happening in South Africa, but we shouldn’t punish Tyla for that. She’s just a musician. If you don’t want to attend her show, then it’s up to Nigerians not to buy tickets.”
His remarks have added another dimension to the ongoing debate, with many social media users agreeing that entertainers should not be held accountable for political or societal issues, while others insist that public figures should use their influence to speak out against injustice.
