Islamic cleric, Musa Lukwa, was reportedly stabbed shortly after leading the Juma’at prayer at his mosque in the Mabera area of Sokoto metropolis on Friday.
The incident, which occurred shortly after the congregational prayer, sent worshippers into a panic as the suspected attacker allegedly turned on the cleric and stabbed him twice in the neck.
The Sokoto State Police Command confirmed the incident, saying the suspect was subsequently overpowered by other worshippers at the mosque.
The command’s spokesperson, Ahmad Rufa’i, told journalists that the suspect was killed by the worshippers after they subdued him.
The motive for the attack was not immediately disclosed, while the police said investigations were ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Lukwa was reportedly rushed for medical attention following the attack.
