The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has pledged continued support for humanitarian and development organisations working to improve the lives of vulnerable communities in Sokoto State.
The Sultan made the commitment on Monday when he received the supervision team of the European Union-funded Action Against Hunger, ACF, project at his palace in Sokoto.
He commended Action Against Hunger for the impact of the intervention, particularly in peacebuilding, social cohesion and efforts to improve communities’ access to essential services.
The Sultanate, he said, would continue to support non-governmental organisations working to improve the socioeconomic wellbeing of people in Sokoto State and Nigeria.
Speaking during the visit, ACF Country Director and team leader, Thiano Samba Diallo, said the delegation was at the palace to appreciate the Sultan for his support since the commencement of the project earlier in the year.
Mr Diallo said the EU-funded intervention was designed to run for 18 months across 10 local government areas of Sokoto State.
He said communities participating in the programme were already benefiting from various interventions under the project.
According to him, community participation remains central to ensuring that the intervention addresses the needs of the people it was designed to support.
Mr Diallo also introduced members of the delegation to the Sultan.
They included Thomas Hugonnier, Director of Global Operations, ACF France; Andualem Fekadu, Deputy Country Director, ACF Nigeria; and Alphee Anderson Kaboue, North-West Coordinator, ACF, as well as other members of the organisation’s Sokoto field office.
The visit was aimed at strengthening collaboration between Action Against Hunger and traditional institutions and acknowledging the support of the Sultanate for humanitarian and development interventions across the state.
The engagement comes as humanitarian organisations continue to work with communities in Sokoto to strengthen social cohesion, improve access to essential services and support vulnerable populations.
