The General Hospital Somolu joined the rest of the world in celebrating “World Food Day” on Friday, 16th October, 2026.

The Medical Director/Chief Executive Officer of the healthcare facility, Dr. Adesina Ayodele, while declaring the celebration open, advised patients and staff to see food as medicine for their bodies.

According to him, “It is important for people to cultivate the habit of reducing the waste of food and water. Farmers and food handlers should rather advocate for more fresh farm produce, create access to safe, nutritious and sufficient food using sustainable farming technologies available today, to feed and nurture the world tomorrow”.

The Catering and Nutrition/Dietetics Departments, which provided fruits, vegetables

and water for the patients, later went round the various wards in the hospital to create awareness of the importance of eating healthy foods.

They also organised a “food preparation demonstration”, in which case clinical and non-clinical staff members were encouraged to participate in the preparation of smoothies, eba, and other foods.

Recall that the “World Food Day” is an international event celebrated every year on October 16 to promote global awareness and action for people who suffer from malnutrition and poverty.

The day is also dedicated to raising awareness about global food insecurity and working towards the total eradication of hunger through the growth of sustainable agricultural production and innovation.

The Y2026 celebration theme: “Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow”, focused on leveraging data, technology, and artificial intelligence to improve access to nutritious food.
