The Nigeria Police Force has issued a statement to the public concerning allegations of xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerians in South Africa.
This comes amid concerns over potential retaliatory actions against South African citizens, businesses, and interests in Nigeria.
A statement signed by DCP Anthony Okon Placid said that following the Joint Intelligence Board meeting held on 18 May 2026, which was presided over by the National Security Adviser, security and intelligence agencies undertook a thorough evaluation to understand the security implications and identify appropriate response strategies.
The Nigeria Police Force reassured Nigerians that there is no cause for alarm.
“The Federal Government is proactively engaging with relevant authorities and stakeholders through diplomatic, intelligence, and security channels to peacefully resolve the situation and safeguard the interests of Nigerians both domestically and internationally,” the statement said.
He added, “While it is natural to be concerned about the safety of Nigerians in South Africa, the public is strongly cautioned against taking the law into their own hands. Acts of retaliation, violence, intimidation, property destruction, hate speech, or any behaviour that jeopardises public peace and national security are illegal and will not be tolerated.
“Nigeria is a nation that upholds the rule of law. All individuals legally residing in the country, regardless of their nationality, are entitled to legal protection. Therefore, any efforts to target South African nationals, diplomatic missions, businesses, or other lawful interests in Nigeria will be regarded as criminal offences and addressed according to existing laws.
“The Force calls on the public to avoid disseminating unverified, inflammatory, or inciting information, particularly on social media platforms. The sharing of false or provocative material can heighten tensions, disrupt public order, and obstruct diplomatic initiatives aimed at resolving the situation.”
The Nigeria Police Force said that, in partnership with other security and intelligence agencies, it has activated security protocols and heightened surveillance around critical national assets.
