Spain is pressing the European Union to end its Association Agreement with Israel, with a formal proposal set for submission this week.
Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez gave the hint at a pre-campaign rally on Sunday as he continued his condemnation of Israel’s offensives in the Middle East.
“The time has come for the EU to break its Association Agreement with Israel,” he told supporters, declaring that a government that “violates international law and EU principles” cannot be its partner.
The Spanish leader stressed that his country has nothing against the people of Israel but disagrees with the actions being carried out by its government.
Sánchez has consistently criticized the military operations in Gaza and Lebanon, accusing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government of excessive force.
Israel continued the destruction of Bint Jbeil and other towns in southern Lebanon over the weekend, with sightings of Merkava battle tanks used by the IDF.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Sunday accused Israel of trying to turn the situation in Lebanon ”into a fait accompli” and called for concerted rejection.
On the Israel-Cyprus-Greece alliance, the diplomat said Muslim countries in the Middle East are worried over Israel’s ”recent expansionist and aggressive policies” in the region.
Fidan added that many share the opinion that Israel’s alleged aim of depopulating Gaza—”whether by killing its people or forcing them to leave”—has not changed.
