Suspected Thief Nabbed, Beaten at Banana Hostel in FUOYE Ikole

Tension gripped the Banana Hostel area near the Ikole Secretariat of the Federal University Oye Ekiti, Ikole Campus, in the early hours of today after a suspected thief was apprehended by residents.

Eyewitnesses said the suspect was caught around 5:00 a.m. in possession of stolen items, including gas cylinders, a generator, and several pieces of clothing. The incident sparked outrage among students and residents, many of whom have been grappling with a growing wave of theft in hostels around the campus.

According to sources at the scene, the suspect allegedly confessed during interrogation that he had carried out similar operations in the past. Some indigenes of the community also claimed to recognize him, alleging he had been linked to previous theft incidents in the area.

Before the arrival of security operatives, the suspect was reportedly beaten by an angry mob — a reaction authorities continue to warn against.

Police officers later intervened, rescuing the suspect and taking him into custody for further investigation. His identity, however, has yet to be officially confirmed.

Students of the institution expressed frustration over what they described as frequent theft cases, particularly involving phones, power banks, and other valuables. Residents also alleged that such incidents occur almost weekly across different hostels within the community.

Authorities have reiterated the need for vigilance while urging the public to avoid jungle justice and instead report suspicious activities to security agencies for proper handling.

Investigations are ongoing.
