Nollywood actress and filmmaker Tierny Olalere has shared her experience navigating the Nigerian film industry, stressing that having a successful movie does not necessarily guarantee a lasting career.
Speaking in an interview with Saturday Beats, Olalere reflected on some of the lessons she has learned throughout her journey in Nollywood and the realities of sustaining relevance in the industry.
According to the actress, landing a major role or being part of a hit movie can bring an actor widespread attention, but such visibility may not last without deliberate career planning and consistent effort.
“I had to learn the hard way that relying solely on your instincts isn’t enough, and having a moment of fame from a hit movie doesn’t mean you have ‘blown’ or permanently made it.”
Olalere noted that the excitement surrounding a viral project or breakthrough role can be temporary if an actor fails to build a sustainable career structure.
“A viral project or breakthrough role gives you momentary visibility, not long-term stability. If you don’t build a sustainable structure, stay disciplined and continuously push for the next milestone, that hype fades very quickly.”
The filmmaker also advised actors not to become complacent because of previous achievements, saying they must continue to evolve and improve themselves to remain relevant.
“You cannot relax on past applause. Survival in this industry requires constantly reinventing yourself and treating your brand like a business,” she said.
Speaking further, Olalere maintained that talent alone is no longer sufficient to guarantee success in Nollywood.
“Talent is definitely not enough anymore. Talent is simply your entry ticket; it gets you noticed, but relationships and strategic networking dictate how far you actually go,” she said.
She explained that maintaining strong professional relationships with directors, producers, casting agents and other industry stakeholders can open doors to opportunities, including roles that may not yet have been publicly advertised.
Olalere also revealed that she has remained committed to her personal values throughout her career, noting that she would not sacrifice her integrity simply to achieve professional advancement.
For the actress, lasting success in Nollywood requires more than talent or a single successful project. She believes consistency, discipline, personal development, strategic relationships and integrity are all important to building a career that can stand the test of time.
