Tanzania has removed Nigerians from its referral visa category, easing the process for travellers from the country.
The change was announced by Tanzania’s Immigration Services Department in a public notice issued under Government Gazette No. 246 of 2026.
Nigerian travellers will no longer require additional clearance from Tanzanian immigration authorities before their visas can be issued.
Under the previous referral visa system, applicants were required to apply in advance and wait for approval before travelling, with applicants advised to submit their applications at least two months before their planned trip.
Following the change, they can apply for Tanzanian visas through the country’s online immigration portal or at designated entry points without undergoing the additional referral approval process.
However, the development does not mean Nigerians can enter Tanzania without a visa.
Nigerian citizens remain subject to Tanzania’s visa requirements and must obtain the appropriate visa before travelling.
The removal from the referral category means they will now follow the ordinary visa process rather than undergo the additional clearance previously required.
Tanzania’s Immigration Department said the list of countries subject to referral visas may be reviewed from time to time.
The change is expected to make travel between Nigeria and Tanzania easier by removing an additional approval stage from the visa application process.
