Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has called on the Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, to withdraw security cover from local government council officials elected under the platform of the All Progressives Congress in the state.
The governor made the call following a judgment of the Federal High Court which nullified the tenure determination suit filed by the APC council officials.
The affected officials had approached the court to determine whether their tenure ended in October 2025, following an Executive Order issued by Governor Adeleke upon assumption of office, which allegedly prevented them from accessing their offices for two years.
Delivering judgment, Justice Funmilola Demi-Ajayi ruled on the matter, prompting Adeleke to commend the decision, which he said was consistent with the provisions of the Constitution.
Reacting to the judgment, Adeleke said the decision further affirmed the position of the Supreme Court that tenure elongation in local government administration is unconstitutional.
“The judgment further validates the precedent set by the Supreme Court ruling that tenure elongation is unconstitutional. Based on today’s judgement, I therefore call on the Inspector General of Police to direct the Osun State Police Command to stop its current support for the Yes/No chairmen,” the governor said.
Adeleke also specifically called on the Commissioner of Police in Osun State to stop providing security cover for what he described as the illegal occupation of council secretariats by the sacked chairmen.
“I specifically direct the Commissioner of Police to stop providing further security cover for the illegal occupation of the council secretariats by the sacked chairmen,” he stated.
The governor further demanded that all law enforcement agencies support the immediate restoration of what he described as the duly elected local government chairmen in the state.
“We demand that all law enforcement agents should support the immediate restoration of the duly elected local government chairmen. This is the path of law and the constitution,” Adeleke added.
The development marks another phase in the lingering political and legal dispute over local government administration in Osun State.
