“This Is Not Respectful”- Ossai Ovie Slams Omoni Oboli’s Alexx Ekubo Tribute Film

Ossai Ovie, the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Delta State Governor, has publicly criticized Nollywood actress and filmmaker Omoni Oboli over the release of a film featuring the late actor Alexx Ekubo shortly after his burial.

In a post shared on his X and Instagram pages on June 18, Ossai condemned the YouTube premiere of The First Lady, describing its timing as inappropriate and suggesting it appeared to exploit grief for promotional gain.

He argued that although Omoni Oboli had stated that all proceeds from the film would be donated to Alexx Ekubo’s family, the release still gave the impression of a publicity strategy rather than a heartfelt tribute.

Ossai also acknowledged the actress’s explanation that the film marked the beginning of her long-standing friendship with the late actor over a decade ago. However, he insisted that linking the project to Alexx Ekubo’s passing was unsettling and poorly considered.

He further accused her of using emotional sentiments to boost engagement and grow her online platform under the guise of honoring the deceased actor.

The governor’s aide emphasized that grief should not be turned into content, stressing that funerals are not promotional events.

According to him, Alexx Ekubo should be celebrated for his life, achievements, and influence rather than having his memory tied to a film release.

He added that if the intention was truly to pay tribute, the announcement could have been delayed out of respect.

Ossai concluded by calling on the public to preserve the dignity of the dead and avoid turning personal tragedy into content for social media or entertainment promotion.
