A Kano-based TikTok user, Khadija Muhammad Yar Lele, has been remanded in a correctional facility after she was arraigned over an alleged defamatory and insulting statement against a politician.
Khadija was brought before the Upper Sharia Court sitting at Post Office, Kano Municipal, where the police filed charges against her.
The case was heard by Justice Garba Malafa.
When the charges were read to her, Khadija pleaded not guilty to all the allegations.
The prosecution counsel, Barrister Awaisu Sani Lawan, subsequently asked the court to adjourn the matter to allow the prosecution to present its witnesses.
After hearing the submissions, the court ordered that the defendant be remanded in a correctional facility and adjourned the case until October 14, 2026, for re-arraignment and continuation of proceedings.
The case followed a TikTok video allegedly posted by Khadija in which she was accused of making insulting remarks about the complainant, identified as MD Hassan, a politician from Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State.
The prosecution alleged that Khadija referred to Hassan using a derogatory expression in the video.
The alleged statement formed part of the basis for the charges brought against her.
Khadija, however, denied the allegations by pleading not guilty when she appeared before the court.
The case has now been adjourned, with the prosecution expected to present its witnesses at the next sitting.
Further proceedings will determine the evidence supporting the allegations and the defendant’s response to them.
