President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to elder statesman and leader of Afenifere, Reuben Fasoranti, on the occasion of his 100th birthday, describing him as a symbol of integrity, discipline, and lifelong service to Nigeria.
In a State House statement commemorating the milestone attained on May 11, the President expressed profound joy, noting that Fasoranti’s century-long life embodies unwavering commitment to noble causes, principled leadership, and national development.
“Baba Fasoranti deserves all the encomiums that will come his way for his uncommon life of service and immense contributions to this country,” Tinubu stated.
President Tinubu highlighted Fasoranti’s early dedication to education, noting his academic journey from the University of Ibadan (formerly University College, Ibadan) to the University of Hull and further studies in Australia.
He praised Fasoranti’s contributions to the education sector, including his role as a teacher at Ondo Boys’ High School and founder of notable institutions such as Omolere Nursery and Primary School, Akure High School, and St. Frances’ Academy, Akure.
Describing him as a devoted disciple of Obafemi Awolowo, Tinubu noted that Fasoranti was one of the last surviving Awoists who upheld the ideals of the defunct Action Group and later the Unity Party of Nigeria.
He recalled Fasoranti’s service as Commissioner for Finance in old Ondo State under Governor Adekunle Ajasin between 1979 and 1983, where his financial prudence and integrity stood out.
Tinubu also lauded Fasoranti’s role during Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle, describing him as a fearless voice against military dictatorship, including during the era of Sani Abacha.
He noted that Fasoranti emerged stronger despite surviving an assassination attempt, continuing his advocacy for democracy, Yoruba unity, and good governance through Afenifere.
Following the death of Abraham Adesanya, Fasoranti became the widely recognised leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political group.
The President acknowledged the personal tragedies Fasoranti has endured, including the loss of his wife in 1991 and the killing of his daughter, Funke Olakunrin, in 2019.
Despite these challenges, Tinubu said the elder statesman has remained resilient and steadfast.
Reflecting on his political journey, President Tinubu revealed that he visited Fasoranti at the start of his presidential campaign, where the elder statesman prayed for his victory.
“God answered his prayer through my victory and eventual ascendancy to the top office,” he said, expressing deep appreciation for Fasoranti’s continued support for the Renewed Hope Administration.
Tinubu concluded by praying for continued strength and long life for the elder statesman, thanking him for his enduring service to Nigeria.
