President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rt. Honourable Andy Burnham, on his assumption of office.
The President also felicitated with the government and people of the United Kingdom over what he described as a peaceful, orderly and seamless leadership transition, saying it reflects the strength of the country’s democratic institutions and constitutional tradition.
According to a statement on Tuesday, July 21, by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Tinubu expressed confidence that Burnham would consolidate the gains recorded in the relationship between both countries.
The statement further noted that the President recalled his “productive engagement” with the immediate past British Prime Minister during his official visit to the UK in March 2026, expressing optimism that the new administration would build on the outcome of the visit.

Tinubu said he looked forward to exploring “vistas of partnership, collaboration and cooperation” with the United Kingdom under Burnham’s leadership.
The President further expressed his readiness to engage with the new British Prime Minister at the earliest opportunity, both bilaterally and multilaterally, particularly through the Commonwealth framework.
He said such engagement would help to “deepen bilateral relations and strengthen the strategic partnership between both countries for the benefit of their peoples.”
The Federal Government, according to the statement, assured Burnham of Nigeria’s willingness to work closely with his administration in advancing shared priorities and addressing common global challenges.

Burnham assumed office as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom following a leadership transition that the Nigerian government described as a reflection of the country’s democratic resilience.
