President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mandated his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, and Special Adviser on Political Matters, Ibrahim Masari, to provide direct presidential supervision over the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary elections for Senate and House of Representatives seats ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The directive comes on the heels of high-level consultations with Senators and members of the House of Representatives, many of whom reportedly demanded strict adherence to internal party democracy in the selection of candidates.
Under the new arrangement, the supervisory team will engage closely with APC state governors, the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), as well as the leadership of the National Assembly — including the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives — in executing the assignment.
Sources indicate that the move is aimed at preventing internal crises, imposition of candidates, and post-primary litigations that have previously plagued the party.
Gbajabiamila and Masari are expected to coordinate with key stakeholders across the states to ensure that the primaries are conducted in a peaceful, transparent, and credible manner. They will also provide regular updates to the President on the progress and conduct of the exercises nationwide.
Political observers say the development signals a strategic effort by the presidency to consolidate party unity and strengthen the APC’s chances ahead of the 2027 polls.
