President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has relieved Dr. Nkiruka Madueke of her duties as Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), replacing her with Omotenioye Majekodunmi, a seasoned climate finance expert and environmental lawyer.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga.
Madueke, who was appointed in June 2024 as the pioneer head of the Council, is being succeeded less than a year into her tenure. The statement, however, acknowledged her “dedicated service and strong foundation” in setting up the institution.
Majekodunmi, who brings over 17 years of experience in climate governance, renewable energy, and carbon markets, previously served as the Council’s Financial Adviser. She played a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s climate policies and managing key international engagements.
Her appointment, the presidency said, underscores the Tinubu administration’s commitment to confronting climate change as a national priority — not only for environmental resilience but also as a catalyst for sustainable economic growth, national security, and inclusive development.
Majekodunmi has worked with both global and national institutions and is expected to drive the Council’s expanding agenda on climate adaptation, carbon trading frameworks, and green economic planning.
