President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said that the ongoing primaries of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are a way of strengthening the party’s internal democracy, news.ng reports.
The president, who spoke to the press after voting at the ongoing APC presidential direct primaries, added that the exercise provides an opportunity for every member of the party to participate and get involved.
According to the president, the goal of the exercise is to promote internal democracy.
He said, “It’s a demonstration of internal democracy, and it has been going very well according to plan.” This is politics, grassroots politics, where every member of the party has a right to participate and be involved. The goal is to ensure that we have an internal democracy, and it’s peaceful and well organized.”
When asked if he was satisfied with the governors of the party conducting primaries in their respective states, the president commended the governors for the conduct of the exercise.
He added, “Today, I am very satisfied, very, very satisfied, that these governors have done well in their various states. The process, in fact, from the ward congresses to local government congresses, to the delegate accreditation, validation, members register, and certification of the electoral process, it has been all very well.”
It is pertinent to note that after the conclusion of the primary elections across 28 states, 23 candidates emerged from the exercise. All sitting governors secured their party’s tickets except Siminalayi Fubara, who withdrew from the exercise, citing his interest in the peace, stability, and unity of Rivers State. Kingsley Chinda emerged as the party’s candidate in the state.
