Since Nigeria returned to democratic rule in 1999, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s repeated absence from the United Nations General Assembly has produced a notable record: he is the first Nigerian president of the Fourth Republic to miss the annual gathering for three consecutive years.
Tinubu attended the 78th United Nations General Assembly in New York in 2023, where he delivered Nigeria’s national statement and presented his administration’s priorities to the international community.
But the pattern changed from the following year.
At the 79th UNGA in 2024, Tinubu did not travel to New York, with Vice President Kashim Shettima leading Nigeria’s delegation.
The same arrangement was repeated in 2025, when Shettima again represented the President at the 80th UN General Assembly.
Now, in 2026, Tinubu has again stayed away from the 81st UNGA, with Shettima once more leading the Nigerian delegation.
The development means that, since assuming office in May 2023, Tinubu has personally attended only one UN General Assembly session.
The repeated absence is particularly noteworthy because the UN General Assembly remains one of the most prominent diplomatic platforms available to world leaders, providing an opportunity for heads of government to address the international community, engage other leaders and advance their countries’ diplomatic and economic interests.
The Presidency has, however, maintained that the President’s absence does not mean Nigeria is inadequately represented. The Vice President and other senior government officials have continued to represent the country at the gathering.
For Nigeria, the issue therefore goes beyond attendance. It raises questions about the changing nature of the country’s representation at one of the world’s most important diplomatic forums and whether the President’s decision to remain at home reflects a deliberate shift in how his administration conducts high-level international diplomacy.
Whatever the explanation, the record is now clear: three consecutive UN General Assembly sessions 2024, 2025 and 2026 without President Tinubu physically attending.
And in the history of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, that represents a remarkable break from the pattern established by successive presidents since 1999.
