US President Donald Trump has threatened to bomb Iran again despite efforts to secure a ceasefire deal, set to be signed on Friday. While in France for the G7 summit, he spoke to the media alongside his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, warning that he could resume the conflict.
Mr Trump said the memorandum of understanding with Iran is not final, and the US will “go back to shooting at them” and “dropping bombs” if he does not approve of how the peace plan plays out. He added: “It’s a memorandum of understanding. And if I don’t like it, we’ll go back to shooting at them, dropping bombs on their head.
“If I don’t like it, if they don’t behave, we’ll go right back to dropping bombs right smack in the middle of their head.”
He said: “We’re not putting up 10 cents. We are not investing, and we do not have a fund… I would say they won’t be doing it for a while until they find out the behaviour [of the Iranians].”
He added that the markets are “very happy” and he will speak more about the situation at a news conference later today.
A sticking point in the protracted peace process has been Iran’s nuclear programme, though Mr Trump maintained that the country will never get its hands on a nuclear weapon.
During yesterday’s G7 meeting, the US President appeared to bore his fellow leaders as he described the UFC event held at the White House for his birthday over the weekend.
The world leaders are in Evian-les-Bains, a French spa town, for the three-day summit, where the tentative deal to end the Iran war has dominated discussions.
