Two people are feared dead following a suspected gunmen attack on a mining location around Kuru Jenta, near the boundary between Jos South and Barkin Ladi Local Government Areas of Plateau State.
The incident reportedly happened at about 11:30 pm on Friday while the victims were at the mining site.
A community member, Weng Bulus, disclosed this to journalists in Jos on Saturday, saying the two victims were from Heipang District.
“Two persons from Heipang District were shot dead by suspected gunmen at the mining site around Kuru Jenta last night,” Bulus said.
He expressed concern over the attack and urged residents to exercise caution, particularly by avoiding mining activities during restricted hours.
According to him, the victims were reportedly at the site despite the curfew imposed by the state government.
“The victims were at the mining site during the period of the curfew imposed by the state government. I want to urge residents to remain vigilant and avoid movements during restricted hours.
“Residents should not violate the curfew, particularly by engaging in night mining, as such movements could expose them to security risks,” he added.
Similarly, the spokesperson for the Berom Youth Moulders Association, Rwang Tengwong, condemned the killings and called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation.
Describing the incident as unfortunate, Tengwong urged security operatives to identify those behind the attack and ensure they face justice.
“This killing is unfortunate. We condemn it in totality.
“We call on security operatives to investigate the killing, identify those responsible and bring them to justice,” he said.
He also advised residents, especially those involved in mining, to avoid nighttime operations and comply with the government’s curfew restrictions.
Efforts to obtain confirmation from the Plateau State Police Command were unsuccessful, as its spokesperson, Alabo Alfred, could not be reached on his telephone, which was switched off at the time of filing this report.
