Two girls believed to be relatives of Boko Haram terrorists have escaped from an insurgent enclave in the Mandara Mountains and surrendered to troops of Operation HADIN KAI in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.
The girls reportedly surrendered on Tuesday to troops of C Company, 192 Battalion (Mechanised), deployed in Gwoza after fleeing Grazah, a Boko Haram enclave in the Mandara Mountains.
Military sources said the minors were received, screened and documented in line with operational procedures and are currently in the custody of the battalion for further profiling and administrative processing.
The surrender is the latest in a series of escapes and voluntary surrenders involving women and children from insurgent-controlled areas in the North-East.
According to the military, sustained operations against Boko Haram and ISWAP have continued to mount pressure on terrorist strongholds, leading to an increase in defections and escapes.
The military added that although the security situation across the theatre remains calm, troops remain on high alert and are sustaining offensive operations against terrorist groups in the region.
