The Governing Council of the University of Abuja has approved the appointment of Malam Alkasim Musa Umar as the institution’s substantive Registrar and Dr Rose Lade Mommoh as the substantive University Librarian.
The appointments, approved by the council under the leadership of its Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Distinguished Senator Dr Olanrewaju Tejuoso, take effect from July 10, 2026.
The decision was reached at the council’s 101st Regular Meeting held on July 10 and 11, 2026.
Both officials will serve a single five-year tenure in line with the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Act and the university’s governing regulations.
Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi, congratulated the appointees, describing their emergence as timely and significant to the institution’s transformation agenda.
According to him, the appointments come “at a critical time in our journey as we continue to reposition the University of Abuja as a globally competitive institution.”
Registrar
Malam Umar holds a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Maiduguri.
He has also earned professional certifications from the Digital Bridge Institute and Souters, United Kingdom.
He began his career at the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, where he served as Liaison Officer in Abuja between 1999 and 2002 before taking on other administrative responsibilities.
He later joined the Registry of the University of Abuja, where he has built a distinguished 17-year career, serving in key units including the Academic Affairs Division, Establishment Division and the TETFund Desk Office.
He also served as Faculty Officer for the Faculties of Education and Agriculture.
Before his appointment, Umar was Deputy Registrar and Head of the Institute of Education, where he supervised administrative operations, registry services, credentials screening and provided secretariat support to the institute’s management board.
Throughout his career, he has served as secretary or member of several strategic university committees, including the Undergraduate Admissions Committee, Senate Committee on the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards, University Portal Committee and the Vice-Chancellor’s Handing-Over Committee.
In 2024, he represented the university at major international engagements, including the International University Exhibition in Nairobi, the Wageningen Innovation Challenge in the Netherlands and the International Association of Universities Conference in Tokyo.
University Librarian
Dr Mommoh earned a Bachelor of Library Science degree from the University of Maiduguri, a Master of Library Science from Bayero University, Kano, and a PhD in Information Science from the University of Maiduguri.
She joined the University of Abuja in 1999 as a Graduate Librarian and rose through the ranks to become Deputy University Librarian and Associate Professor in 2020.
With over 25 years of professional experience, she has established expertise in library administration, collection development, digital library services, research support and strategic information management.
She has held several leadership positions within the university library, including Head of the Circulation Unit, Collection Development and Readers’ Services at the Engineering Library.
Until her appointment, she served as Postgraduate Coordinator in the Department of Library and Information Science.
A prolific scholar, Dr Mommoh has authored numerous academic publications and presented papers at national and international conferences, including those held in China and Poland. She is a registered member of the Librarians Registration Council of Nigeria and the Nigerian Library Association.
The appointments are expected to strengthen the university’s administrative and academic support systems as the institution pursues its vision of enhancing excellence in teaching, research and global competitiveness.
