These are the latest updates on the US-Iran talks and the war in Lebanon on Saturday afternoon:
• Iran has again closed the Strait of Hormuz after Israel refused to comply with the ceasefire in Lebanon imposed by Tehran’s agreement with the US. Iran accused the US of failing to uphold the memorandum of understanding after Israel escalated its attacks against Hezbollah.
• US and Iranian officials will begin negotiations in Switzerland on Sunday, according to Pakistan’s foreign ministry. Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi will arrive in the country tonight ahead the technical talks with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jard Kushner. US Vice President JD Vance may also join in the coming days.
• Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the military to halt its attacks in Lebanon following a day of heavy bombing across the south.
• Intense Israeli bombing in Lebanon on Thursday killed 83 people and injured more than 140 others, according to Lebanese health authorities. More than 4,000 people have now been killed by Israeli attacks since 2 March.
• At least five people were killed in Gaza this morning in an Israeli strike on an apartment building in Gaza City.
