Social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, has criticised the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, over the reported proposal to replace the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) khaki uniform with adire attire.
Reacting in a video shared online, VeryDarkMan questioned the decision, arguing that adire is traditionally associated with the Yoruba ethnic group and should not be adopted as the official attire for a national programme that represents Nigeria’s diverse cultural identities.
He said appointing individuals who make such proposals to key government positions leads to “unwise decisions,” adding that other ethnic groups, including the Igbo, Hausa, Nupe, Efik, Edo and Ijaw, also have traditional attires that could be considered.
According to him, assigning a predominantly Yoruba attire to the NYSC, a national institution, raises concerns about inclusivity and cultural representation.
