Uganda is mourning the death of veteran politician and retired military officer, Gen. (Rtd) Moses Ali, who passed away at the age of 87.
The former Deputy Prime Minister and Member of Parliament for Adjumani West Constituency died on July 18, 2026, at approximately 4:00 PM at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala, following reported health complications. He had been receiving medical care for several days before his death.
The passing of the elder statesman was officially announced by President Yoweri Museveni, who described Gen. Moses Ali as a patriot and praised his “immense contribution to Uganda’s development.”
Born into a long and influential public service career, Gen. Moses Ali joined the Uganda Army in 1968 after receiving military training in Israel and the United Kingdom. He rose through the ranks and was later promoted to the rank of four-star general in the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF).
His career spanned Uganda’s turbulent political history. He initially served as a government minister during the era of former President Idi Amin, later became leader of the Uganda National Rescue Front (UNRF) rebel movement, and eventually signed a peace agreement with President Museveni’s government in 1986.
After returning to mainstream politics, Gen. Moses Ali held several senior government positions, including serving as First, Second, and Third Deputy Prime Minister of Uganda. He stepped down from his Cabinet position in May 2026.
He also represented Adjumani West in Parliament since 1996 and was re-elected for a seventh term in the January 2026 general elections.
Gen. Moses Ali’s death marks the end of a remarkable chapter in Uganda’s military and political history.
