The newly commissioned 5.3-kilometre road linking Gateway International Cargo Airport in Iperu to the Sagamu-Benin Expressway has been overtaken by flood after a heavy downpour on Monday, April 13, 2026, news.ng reports.
Recall on Saturday, April 4, 2026, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, during an official visit to Ogun State, commissioned landmark projects undertaken by the State Governor Dapo Abiodun and among the projects commissioned was the cargo airport, including the expressway.
Meanwhile, barely one week after the commissioning of the road videos, which went viral on the microblogging platform, X, on Tuesday and monitored by this news platform, shows floodwaters submerging parts of the expressway.
This has elicited reactions from Nigeria on the platform, criticising the government for the execution of the project.
Some of the questions raised were the incomplete gutters and drainage failures, arguing that these components, which are vital in road construction, should have been completed before calling on the President to commission the project.
According to a user, Bambo, he noted that the upcoming rainy season will make things worse if the state government does not intervene amid the billions of Naira spent on the project.
He said, “The upcoming rains will likely worsen the road’s condition, leading to imminent cracking and the further loss of the millions/billions already spent on the project.”
Another user, @Lexi_cool17, said, “It’s already a failure because we just entered raining season and you can’t tell rain to stop. This road won’t last more than 1 year. Check the coastal road, less than one-year portholes are already there and remember it’s concrete.”
Also, a user, @jude_chiji, said this is a typical example of road construction in Nigeria without drainage.
“Wahala no too much like this…typical Najia road construction without drainages, at this point it seems the contractors give them cost for drainages separately, then the government takes it off the contract, cos it is becoming a norm now,” he noted.
The Ogun state government is yet to respond to the development as of the time of this report.
