The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has launched an investigation into a viral video showing an unidentified police officer allegedly drinking from a bottle believed to contain alcohol while conducting a stop-and-search operation.

The video, which has been widely circulated on social media, shows the officer interacting with occupants of a vehicle parked by the roadside. During the encounter, the officer is seen repeatedly drinking from the bottle while carrying out the operation.

The footage has sparked widespread reactions among Nigerians, with many expressing concern over the officer’s conduct and questioning the professionalism expected of law enforcement personnel while on duty.

Adding to the controversy, the officer is heard mentioning figures while one of the vehicle occupants operates a mobile phone, leading to allegations of possible financial solicitation. Although the circumstances surrounding the interaction remain unclear, the incident has generated public debate and calls for accountability.

Reacting to the viral video, the Nigeria Police Force confirmed that it is aware of the incident and has commenced efforts to identify the officer involved, determine the location of the operation, and establish the full facts surrounding the encounter.

In a statement posted on X, the Force’s New Media Officer, Aliyu Giwa, said the police leadership is taking the matter seriously and has initiated an inquiry.

The force leadership is aware of a viral video that appears to show a police officer allegedly soliciting financial gratification and drinking from a bottle believed to contain alcohol while interacting with vehicle occupants, the statement read.

Giwa further assured members of the public that the Force is committed to transparency and accountability in handling the matter.

We are working to identify the officer, determine the location, and clarify the circumstances of the incident. The Force assures the public that appropriate action will follow the outcome of the inquiry,” he added.
