WAEC Appoints Nigerian, Amos Dangut, as 14th Registrar, Begins Five-Year Tenure

Former Nigeria National Office Head assumes regional leadership as examination body advances digital transformation agenda

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has appointed Nigerian education administrator, Dr Amos Josiah Dangut, as its 14th Registrar and Chief Executive Officer.

Dangut assumed office on October 1, 2026, for a five-year tenure running until September 2031, succeeding Alhaji Pateh Bah of The Gambia.

His appointment was ratified by WAEC’s governing Council at its 74th Annual Meeting held in Accra, Ghana, in March 2026.

The appointment places an experienced Nigerian examination administrator at the helm of the regional examination body, following his three-year tenure as Head of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office from October 2023 to September 2026.

Born on October 2, 1967, Dangut holds a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production, a Master of Science in Animal Science, a PhD in Animal Science and a Master of Education in Administration and Planning.

He began his teaching career in 1994 at St. Louis College, Jos, where he also served as a WAEC examiner. He joined the council in 1998 as an Assistant Registrar II and subsequently rose through several positions to become a Deputy Registrar.

Throughout his career, Dangut served in various departments and offices, including the Test Development Division in Lagos, Examinations Security Department, and WAEC branch offices in Uyo, Bauchi and Yola. He also served as Controller of the Post-Examinations Department and Zonal Coordinator at the Ikeja office.

With extensive experience in examination administration, he has championed the deployment of Information and Communications Technology to improve examination development, conduct and post-examination processes.

During his tenure as Head of the Nigeria National Office, Dangut oversaw major digital initiatives, including the introduction of Computer-Based WASSCE, serialization of examination question papers and the Digital Electronic Marking System.

Other initiatives under his watch included the Digital Certificate Portal, WAEC E-Study Platform, Digital Records Archive and technology-driven systems for examination logistics and examiner monitoring.

His contributions to examination administration have earned him professional recognition, including a commendation from the Nigeria Examinations Committee for his handling of examination matters between 2000 and 2006.

He also received an Award for Meritorious Service from the Ondo State Government during his National Youth Service Corps year.

Beyond WAEC, Dangut has served on the boards of the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board and Grange Educational Foundation.

He has also represented WAEC at the Joint Consultative Committee on Education and the National Council on Education.

An academic researcher and conference contributor, Dangut has published papers in national and international journals. He currently serves as the West African sub-region’s representative on the Executive Board of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa.

He is a Fellow of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria and a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management.

His appointment comes with responsibility for overseeing WAEC’s regional examination administration and strengthening the council’s commitment to credible examinations, educational assessment, technological innovation and academic standards across West Africa.
