Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has stirred conversations online after speaking about Nigeria’s electricity crisis and citizens’ reaction to poor power supply.
Speaking during a recent appearance, Obi compared Nigeria’s electricity generation with that of South Africa, noting that South Africans still complain despite generating over 40,000 megawatts of electricity.
According to him, Nigerians have become too comfortable enduring poor electricity despite the country reportedly generating only about 4,000 megawatts.
“I was in South Africa, they have over 40k megawatt of electricity and yet people are complaining they have no power when we have just 4k in Nigeria and we’re not complaining. This is the time for us to come out to complain,” Obi said.
His statement quickly generated reactions on social media, with many Nigerians agreeing that citizens have normalized poor electricity and other forms of hardship over the years.
One user, @Ogechex, wrote: “people wey get 40k dey complain wetin dem wan make people we dey manage 4k do?”
Another user, @Owoyibo, added: “NEPA trained Nigerians so hard that stable electricity now feels like luxury instead of basic infrastructure.”
Others, however, criticized Obi, questioning his record during his time as governor of Anambra State.
@Oluwato04034947 reacted: “When you are a governor for good 8 years what were your efforts to add to the grid.”
Another commenter, @Abbeyhunts, wrote: “This man never added a single megawatt to the national grid or a single IPP in Anambra state for 8 years as a governor.”
