When We Brought Out Our Shoes, Maggots Were coming-Mohamed Recounts Harsh Conditions During Training

Major General Umar Mohammed (Rtd) has recounted the harsh conditions soldiers sometimes experience during military training.

In an interview with TRUST TV on Wednesday June 24, 2026, Mohammed said there were instances during training exercises where soldiers were unable to remove their boots for up to four days due to the intensity and demands of the operation.

He said that during such periods, soldiers operated in difficult environments involving water, mud, and prolonged movement, which made conditions extremely unhygienic. He added that when the boots were eventually removed, maggots were found in some of them due to the accumulation of dirt and moisture.

“There was a time we went somewhere, we couldn’t remove our boots during training for four days. When we brought out our shoes, maggots were coming out from our boots because if there is water and dirts, you would see maggots coming out, very dirty.”
