“Whether Tinubu is performing well or not, he must return to office, It’s still Yoruba turn” — Yoruba Elder

A Yoruba elder has declared support for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election, saying the president should return to office despite concerns over the state of the Nigerian economy.

The elder made the remarks in a viral video circulating on social media, where he explained that his support for Tinubu was largely based on the president being a Yoruba man and what he described as the turn of the Yoruba people.

‘We support Baba because he is Yoruba’

According to the elder, Yoruba people would continue to support Tinubu even if his administration had not performed to their expectations.

He argued that Tinubu remained the preferred choice of the Yoruba people, adding that the president would win the election but should not expect to control every state in the region.

“Either Tinubu knows how to do it or he does not know how to do it. Tinubu should go back there because he is still the tenure of the Yoruba people. And Yoruba people will finish before any other person can take it,” he said.

Elder asks Tinubu to ‘leave some states’

The speaker, however, appeared to draw a distinction between supporting Tinubu for president and backing his political interests across all Yoruba states.

He referenced the political situation in Osun State and said Tinubu should not expect to win every state.

“We thank God for the election in Osun. Baba will not take everything. He knows we support Baba because he is a Yoruba man,” he said.

Speaking about Ogun State, he said the outcome of the election would determine which candidate the people choose.

“We will play an election in Ogun State and then we’ll see the person that will win. In your state, we will play an election in your state and we’ll know who will take it,” he added.

‘Not that everything is good in Nigeria’

The Yoruba elder stressed that his support for Tinubu was not an indication that everything was going well in the country.

“We want to support Baba. Not that everything is good in Nigeria. Not that we don’t know our rights,” he said.

He also called on the president to pay attention to complaints from people in some South-West states, particularly Ogun and Oyo.

“Baba, relax. He’s going to win. But he should leave some states. Politics is by trade,” he said.

He specifically urged Tinubu to “forget Ogun State” and “forget Oyo State” because, according to him, people in the states were crying and lamenting.

‘We will speak the truth’

The elder said Yoruba people would continue to speak out when they believed the interests of the people were being ignored.

“We are the sons of the soil. We will speak the truth when the truth will come,” he said.

He mentioned Ogun, Oyo and Kwara states as places where the Yoruba people would speak their minds during the political process.

“Baba should not say that he will get all the Yoruba land. No, no, no, no. Baba will not get all the Yoruba land,” he added.

However, he maintained his prediction that Tinubu would win the 2027 presidential election, while urging Peter Obi to wait for another opportunity.

“But Baba is going to win this election. Obi, go and take your time. It is not your time,” he said.
