Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, National Leader of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), has stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu lacks the capacity and ability to address the escalating security situation in the country, calling for his resignation, News.ng reports.
Baba-Ahmed, who said this in an interview on Arise Television on Thursday morning, noted that the president’s current performance ahead of the 2027 general elections is sufficient grounds for him to resign.
He said, “What else is there to say to President Tinubu and to Nigerians? I listened to your programme. You dwelt extensively on the escalation of these kidnappings and violent crimes all over the country.
“It’s clear President Tinubu has no handle on the escalating violence. Everything that needed to have been said by the media, by civil society, by everybody else, except of course the National Assembly. And Tinubu himself and his tiny cycle of supporters appear to believe that this is a problem that we can live with.
“And they suggest it by their body language. They suggest it in every way they can. They condemn it.
“Every time children from generals to toddlers are stolen, every inch of Nigeria is now vulnerable to insecurity. What else is there? In a civilized democracy, President Tinubu’s record on insecurity would have cost him his seat a long time ago. So, it’s not too late to say President Tinubu should go.
“If we project what he’s doing, how he’s performing between now and the elections, we don’t even need to wait. Nigerians will reject him. But do we need to wait until more and more schoolchildren and women and adults and the whole country is overrun by criminality? We took a very responsible, very measured position in the PRB by saying President Tinubu should resign.”
According to him, in a democratic setting, it is the duty of the president to protect lives and create an enabling economic environment, areas in which he said the president has failed.
Responding to the rising insecurity in the country, where over 80 innocent Nigerians, including students, pupils, and teachers, were abducted from schools in Oyo and Borno states, and to a recent incident in which seven students were kidnapped in the Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State on Wednesday morning, Baba-Ahmed said that every part of the country is now vulnerable.
He added that the president has spectacularly failed to secure the lives of Nigerians, reiterating the need for him to resign.
According to him, “There’s nothing wrong, partisan, or confrontational in that statement.” In a democratic setting, you elect a president to perform two basic tasks. One is to protect the citizens.
“The other one is to protect the means by which they earn a legitimate living. Now, President Tinubu has spectacularly failed to protect anybody. Again, like I said, every part of Nigeria is now vulnerable.
“Everybody in Nigeria, except maybe if you’re in that tiny little cycle in the APC, is vulnerable. Children, toddlers in school, have been stolen. So, what else do you say to a president who has failed? Sir, you cannot run this country, so please step down.
“Now, it is not a partisan thing. It’s not a confrontational thing. It is the responsible to do.
“We’ve said everything else. And we say this with all sense of responsibility. President Tinubu should resign.”
