World football governing body FIFA has issued an official clarification on the qualification permutations in Africa’s Group C, hours before the highly anticipated World Cup qualifier between South Africa and Nigeria on Tuesday.
South Africa, sitting atop the group with 16 points, are six clear of Nigeria, who have managed just two wins from seven matches, totaling 10 points. Benin Republic remain in contention with 11 points as they host Lesotho in Abidjan, making Tuesday’s fixtures potentially decisive for the final standings.
According to FIFA’s official statement on X, “Two more teams could secure @fifaworldcup 26 qualification today. Egypt will qualify if they beat Burkina Faso, while South Africa will qualify if they beat Nigeria, and Benin fail to beat Lesotho.”
The announcement has reignited debate among fans, especially in light of the unresolved disciplinary case involving South Africa. Reports indicate that Bafana Bafana could face a three-point and three-goal deduction for allegedly fielding an ineligible player against Lesotho in March. While ESPN had previously reported the possible sanction, FIFA has yet to issue a ruling.
Benin Republic coach, Gernot Rohr, expressed frustration at the delay. “FIFA and CAF have failed to act on a disciplinary case involving South Africa fielding an ineligible player,” Rohr said, criticizing the unexplained postponement.

A win for South Africa over Nigeria could secure their automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup, provided Benin fail to beat Lesotho.
