French authorities have placed a 70-year-old woman under formal investigation over the fatal stabbing of British-South African mother-of-four Karen Carter in the Dordogne region of France.
According to the BBC, Carter, 65, was found with stab wounds beside her car in the village of Trémolat in April last year. She had lived in the area for more than 10 years and managed two holiday rental properties. The suspect had initially been detained in 2025 during preliminary investigations before later being released.
Investigating judge Jacques-Edouard Andrault said the evidence gathered since a judicial inquiry was opened on May 7, 2025, prompted the decision to place the woman under formal investigation.
Under French law, being placed under formal investigation means an investigating judge believes there is sufficient evidence to continue the case while determining whether it should proceed to trial.

Following Carter’s death, her husband, Alan Carter, revealed that he first learned of the incident through a relative who saw reports on a local Facebook community page before police later confirmed the tragedy.
He described his late wife as a warm, outgoing and compassionate person who was loved by everyone around her, saying her death had left the family deeply traumatised. Alan said her kindness and caring nature were among the reasons he fell in love with and married her.
