Former Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo, has left the door open to a future career in politics, saying he would not rule out public service despite spending most of his professional life in football.
Yobo made the remark on Thursday while speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the launch of the Abuja City Walk Sales Office and Experience Centre in Abuja, where he was asked whether his growing presence at government events signalled an interest in politics.
The former Super Eagles skipper said while football had defined much of his life, leadership and governance were areas that naturally interested him because of their impact on society.
“You can never truly tell what will happen; the future is always in God’s hands.
“As for whether I will join politics, you can never say never,” he said.
Yobo said his years of leading the Nigerian national team had exposed him to responsibilities that were not entirely different from those required in public leadership.
“I am a sports person, but of course, I have lived most of my life abroad, served as the captain of the Nigerian national team, and held leadership roles before.”
He added that governance remained an area of interest because of its direct impact on the lives of ordinary citizens.
“I am naturally interested because politics and governance shape our daily lives. You just never know what the future holds. When the time is right, God will decide,” he added.
For now, the former Everton defender said his presence in Abuja was to witness the ongoing infrastructure projects being executed by the FCT Administration under Minister Nyesom Wike.
Describing Wike as his former governor, Yobo said he had been impressed by the pace of development in the nation’s capital, adding that residents who knew Abuja before the current administration could easily appreciate the transformation.
He urged the FCT Administration to sustain the momentum, expressing optimism that the ongoing projects would further improve the capital city’s infrastructure and quality of life.
