Mahdi Mohammadi, an adviser to Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and a member of the country’s negotiating team, has stated that United States President, Donald Trump’s proposed extension of the ceasefire “means nothing”.
Mohammadi made the comment amid ongoing negotiations tied to the conflict in the Middle East, insisting that a party he described as being at a disadvantage in the talks cannot impose conditions.
According to CNN, Mohammadi said: “The losing side cannot dictate terms. The continuation of the siege is no different from bombardment and must be met with a military response.”
Trump’s declaration that the ceasefire would remain in effect followed a tense day marked by uncertainty.
Earlier, the US President had indicated he “expected to be bombing” Iran again in the near term, raising concerns about a potential escalation.
Despite the temporary calm, no fresh timeline has been set for the truce. Sources familiar with internal discussions revealed that some of Trump’s advisers have cautioned that easing pressure on Iran could give Tehran room to prolong negotiations.
However, that strategy has faced criticism from others who argue that Iran may be deliberately stalling, possibly using the time to recover and reposition missile systems that were concealed during the course of the conflict.
