Human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has commended Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo for his administration’s efforts to tackle kidnapping but maintained that the governor has failed in governance.
Adeyanju said on Wednesday that although he had consistently criticised Okpebholo’s administration, he acknowledged the government’s stance against kidnapping and its measures to address the crime.
“While I have consistently criticised the Edo State Governor and remain opposed to his failed governance style, I must commend his firm stance and the steps his administration has taken in the fight against kidnapping in Edo State,” he said.
He specifically cited the identification and prosecution of suspected kidnappers and the demolition of properties and hideouts allegedly linked to criminal activities.
According to him, the measures send a strong message that kidnapping and other violent crimes will not be tolerated in the state.
Adeyanju urged Okpebholo to intensify the efforts and strengthen preventive measures to tackle kidnapping across Edo State.
He called on the state government to make full use of community policing by strengthening security structures at the ward and local government levels.
“This will enable communities to provide timely intelligence and support efforts to prevent kidnappings before they occur,” he said.
