2027: Cross River PDP Chairman Dumps Party, Gives Reasons

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State, Venatius Ikem, has resigned from his position with immediate effect.

He blamed the decision on internal divisions, leadership challenges and a lack of clear direction within the party.

Politics Nigeria reports that Ikem announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the PDP National Secretary at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja and the state secretary in Calabar.

He said the prevailing situation had made it increasingly difficult for him to discharge his responsibilities as chairman.

The former chairman expressed concern that disagreements among party stakeholders were weakening the PDP’s unity and undermining its ability to pursue a common political agenda ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He described the situation as a crisis of direction and leadership coherence, warning that continued divisions could jeopardise the sacrifices and aspirations of loyal party members.

“As we enter a critical electoral season, I have found it increasingly difficult to reconcile my responsibilities as State Chairman with the prevailing internal dynamics and divergent positions that continue to weaken the party’s ability to pursue a clear and united course,” he stated.

Ikem said his decision followed careful consideration of the party’s internal affairs and his conviction that a reassessment of his political future had become necessary.

Despite his decision to step down, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the PDP in Cross River State for five years.

He acknowledged the contributions of party leaders, members and supporters who stood by him during his tenure, particularly Senator (Prof.) Sandy Onor and Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe, whom he credited with providing encouragement and support during difficult periods.

The former chairman also appreciated the contributions of Nyesom Wike, whom he described as the party’s national leader, noting his role in their collective political efforts.

He extended his gratitude to supporters across Cross River State, particularly residents of Obudu, his immediate constituency, for their loyalty and commitment over the years.

Explaining the need for a change, Ikem said he had reached a point where reassessment, a clearer vision and a new pathway were necessary for his political future.

“Life and leadership often require periods of reassessment and renewal,” he said, adding that future decisions must be guided by purpose, clarity and a commitment to advancing the interests of the people.

He, however, reaffirmed his commitment to the progress, stability and development of Cross River State and Nigeria, while wishing the PDP success in its future endeavours.

Meanwhile, the development comes amid fresh political tension in Cross River State, where the Wike-backed faction of the PDP has accused armed men of attacking its campaign team during political consultations.

Politics Nigeria reports that faction’s National Working Committee, in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, alleged that the attackers disrupted its activities, vandalised campaign vehicles and injured several supporters.

The party called on security agencies to investigate the incident and ensure that anyone found responsible was brought to justice.

It also alleged possible political sponsorship of the attack and claimed that Governor Bassey Otu might have been involved. However, the statement provided no independent confirmation of the allegation.

According to the faction, the attackers fired sporadically during the incident, leaving some supporters injured and damaging vehicles belonging to the campaign team.

The party described the reported attack as a threat to democratic participation and the right of political parties to engage with voters ahead of the 2027 elections.

It also challenged Governor Otu to account for the financial resources accruing to the state and explain how the funds had been utilised.

The faction questioned the administration’s infrastructure record, alleging that it had not provided sufficient evidence of major projects initiated and completed under its tenure. It further claimed that some projects presented as achievements amounted to repainting existing structures.

The PDP faction maintained that public funds should translate into improved infrastructure, employment opportunities and better living conditions for residents.
