The Abia State Government has announced progress in efforts to restore up to 50 megawatts (MW) of electricity from the national grid to the Aba Power network as an emergency backup.
The development followed recent engagements between the state government, Geometric Power Aba Limited (GPAL), the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) and the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC).
According to the state government, the planned restoration of the 50MW grid supply is intended to provide a contingency source of electricity for the Aba Ring-Fenced Area, particularly during emergencies.
It said the arrangement would also strengthen the network’s capacity to respond to rising electricity demand from industries, businesses and households in Aba and its environs.
The government also disclosed that discussions were ongoing on an alternative gas supply arrangement for the Geometric Power Plant, in collaboration with Geometric Power, NDPHC and other stakeholders.
It said the proposed alternative gas supply route would provide a backup to the plant’s existing gas supply system and reduce the risk of disruptions arising from dependence on a single gas source.
The government said the initiatives were part of efforts to develop a more resilient electricity supply system for Aba, a major industrial and commercial centre in the country.
Reliable electricity, it noted, remained critical to manufacturers, traders, artisans, businesses and households whose operations depend on stable power supply.
The state government said it was continuing discussions with relevant Federal Government agencies, power-sector operators, gas suppliers and other stakeholders on the technical, commercial and regulatory requirements for the proposed arrangements.
It also acknowledged the patience and understanding of electricity consumers in Aba and assured them that updates would be provided as work on the initiatives progressed.
The Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Engr. Ikechukwu Monday, signed the statement on behalf of the ministry.
The state government expressed appreciation to Geometric Power, NISO and NDPHC for their cooperation and technical support towards strengthening electricity supply in Aba.
