The Abia State Government has commenced plans to relocate palm kernel dealers and crackers operating along Nkata Ameke Road in Umuahia as part of ongoing efforts to safeguard public health, improve environmental standards, and promote orderly urban development across the state capital.
The initiative was unveiled during an engagement meeting between officials of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA) and members of the Palm Kernel Dealers Association, where stakeholders discussed the modalities for a smooth and seamless relocation process.
Speaking during the meeting, the General Manager of UCDA, Mr. Kingsley Agomoh, emphasized that the government recognizes the economic importance of palm kernel processing and remains committed to ensuring that operators continue their businesses in a more suitable and environmentally friendly location.
He explained that concerns over the environmental impact of the current operations, particularly the emission of smoke from palm kernel processing activities, necessitated the government’s intervention. According to him, the smoke has become a source of discomfort and health concern for residents and commuters within the area.
Agomoh further noted that the present location of the dealers falls within a railway corridor, making the continued occupation of the area incompatible with the state’s urban renewal and infrastructural development objectives.
The UCDA General Manager reiterated that the administration of Governor Alex Otti is determined to create a well-planned urban environment where businesses can thrive without constituting hazards to public health or disrupting critical infrastructure.
He clarified that the relocation exercise would not be limited to operators directly occupying the railway track corridor but would also extend to those carrying out palm kernel processing activities on private properties within the affected vicinity.
The meeting provided an opportunity for dialogue between government officials and the dealers, with assurances that the relocation process would be carried out in a manner that considers the welfare and operational needs of those affected.
The Vice President of the Palm Kernel Dealers Association, Mrs. Queen Uwandu, on behalf of organization expressed appreciation to the Abia State Government and the UCDA for adopting a peaceful and consultative approach rather than resorting to enforcement measures without prior engagement.
She pledged the association’s cooperation with the government and appealed for the allocation of a relocation site with reliable access to water, noting that adequate water supply remains essential for the effective operation of their businesses.
The planned relocation is expected to contribute significantly to the state’s broader urban renewal agenda while creating a safer, cleaner, and more organized environment for residents and businesses alike.
