One of the presidential candidates in the recently concluded national election of the Nigerian Bar Association, Olumuyiwa Akinboro (SAN), has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, and the Department of State Security to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the possible violation of the provisions of the Cyber Crime Act, the Data Protection Act and all other relevant laws in the conduct of the election.
The senior lawyer finished third in the July 18 and 19, 2026 election with 5,855 votes. His co-contender Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN won with 12,317 votes, followed by Lateef Akangbe, SAN, who had 7,934 votes.
Mr Akinboro, SAN, also copied the Chairman, Body of Benchers, Albert Akpomudje (SAN); the General Council of the Bar; the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN; Past Presidents of the NBA; the NBA President, Afam Osigwe, SAN, and the Chairman, Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA), Aham Ejelam, SAN.

In his letter titled, “A call for urgent intervention and redress” over the controversial election, Mr Akinboro requests an immediate independent forensic audit of the entire electoral process from beginning to end, to be conducted by a reputable audit firm.
His call centres on allegations of a cyber attack on the e-voting platform, Compliance with the election guidelines,
The circumstances surrounding the use of multiple links during the election, among other contentions.
He also challenged the NBA president to immediately make public the reports of observers such as the European Union, the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Yiaga Africa and INEC, who were billed to monitor the election.
Mr Akinboro defended his stance in not filing a petition before the National Officers Election Appeal Committee of the NBA, saying it is premature to do so, as the “charade” that took place on the 18th and 19th July 2026 was not an election known to the NBA Constitution.
He also called for an Immediate reconstitution of the ECNBA to conduct a fresh National Officers’ Election in accordance with the provisions of the NBA Constitution.
