Akpabio Defends Tinubu’s Reforms, Says President Prioritized Nigeria’s Future Over Immediate Comfort

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has thrown his weight behind President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, stating that the Nigerian leader chose a path aimed at securing the country’s long-term prosperity rather than pursuing policies that would provide only temporary relief.

Speaking on the administration’s performance, Akpabio said Tinubu took bold decisions that many leaders would have avoided because of the short-term difficulties they could create. According to him, the president remained focused on building a stronger economic foundation for future generations despite the challenges faced by Nigerians during the reform process.

He highlighted key policies introduced by the administration, including the removal of fuel subsidies and foreign exchange reforms, describing them as necessary measures to address deep-rooted economic issues. Akpabio noted that while the policies initially increased pressure on households and businesses, they were designed to put the nation on a more sustainable economic path.

The Senate President argued that years of economic distortions required decisive action, adding that postponing such reforms would have only worsened Nigeria’s financial situation. He maintained that the government chose to confront difficult realities instead of relying on temporary solutions that could create bigger problems in the future.

Akpabio also pointed to signs that the reforms are beginning to produce positive outcomes, including improvements in government revenue generation, increased investor interest, and ongoing investments in critical infrastructure projects across the country.

While acknowledging concerns over the high cost of living and inflation, he expressed confidence that the long-term benefits of the reforms would eventually outweigh the current challenges. He urged Nigerians to remain patient as the administration continues efforts to stabilize the economy and expand opportunities for growth.

The Senate President reaffirmed the National Assembly’s support for policies aimed at strengthening the country’s economic outlook, insisting that the decisions being taken today are intended to secure a more prosperous future for Nigeria.Read more…
