Apapa Iganmu Local Council Development Area (LCDA) has sealed the popular 7up Market in Ijora following the market’s filthy state.
The enforcement action was carried out on Thursday, 23 July, 2026, under the directive of the Chairman of Apapa Iganmu LCDA, Hon. Jimoh Olawale Saliu, as part of the council’s ongoing efforts to promote a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment across the local government area.
The decision followed an inspection tour led by the chairman’s monitoring team alongside officials of the Environmental Services and Waste Management Department to assess the level of compliance with the weekly environmental sanitation exercise across markets within the LCDA.
During the inspection, several traders at the 7UP Market were found displaying and selling their wares openly during the designated sanitation hours, in clear violation of existing environmental sanitation regulations.
The development came despite repeated warnings issued by the council during previous visits by Environmental Health Officers.
According to the officials, the condition of the market fell far below the commitment earlier made by the market leadership during the executive chairman’s last visit, when they pledged to maintain a cleaner market environment and ensure full compliance with sanitation directives.
Speaking on the enforcement exercise, the Chairman of Apapa Iganmu LCDA, Hon. Jimoh Olawale Saliu, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enforcing environmental laws and maintaining public health standards across Apapa Iganmu LCDA.
He stressed that the sealing of the market should serve as a strong warning to other markets and business operators within the council area, emphasizing that his administration has adopted a zero-tolerance policy toward violations of environmental sanitation regulations and other related laws.
The Chairman urged market leaders, traders, and residents to embrace environmental cleanliness as a shared responsibility, noting that sustained compliance with sanitation exercises remains essential to preventing disease outbreaks and ensuring a healthier environment for all.
The Apapa Iganmu LCDA boss reiterated its resolve to continue strict enforcement of environmental sanitation regulations while encouraging all stakeholders to support government efforts aimed at keeping markets and public spaces clean and safe.
